Wildfire in United Kingdom Of Great Britain And Northern Ireland

A large-scale wildfire broke out near Ryvoan Bothy in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland, on 15 July 2026, spreading rapidly through dry heathland and woodland around Glenmore and Abernethy. The fire led to precautionary evacuations and closures around Glenmore Forest Park, Loch Morlich and surrounding areas.

Firefighting operations continued for several weeks, involving Scottish Fire and Rescue Service crews, specialist wildfire units, heavy machinery, partner agencies and helicopter water-bombing. By 27 July, the affected area was estimated at approximately 25 km². Although visible flames had reduced significantly following improved weather conditions and targeted firefighting, extensive smouldering hotspots and underground burning remained.

The incident caused significant environmental impacts across the Cairngorms, with emergency services maintaining a presence to prevent re-ignition and monitor remaining hotspots.
