Flood in Peru
Southern Peru has been hit by intense, prolonged rainfall, leading to widespread flooding and destructive mudslides, particularly in the regions of Arequipa and Ica.
Multiple reports confirm two deaths, of a father and son who were swept away in a mudslide in Arequipa were confirmed. Fifteen people have died after a military helicopter providing rescue services during severe flooding crashed on 22 February.
Around 5,500 homes have been affected, with roads collapsing, vehicles buried, and entire neighborhoods inundated. Heavy rains have cut off access to several towns, leaving residents stranded and dependent on emergency crews. Mudslides triggered by heavy rainfall bury vehicles and cause roads to collapse.
Authorities warn that continued rainfall could worsen conditions, and emergency assessments are ongoing.
