Flood in Brazil

By 25 February, southeastern Brazil had experienced record-breaking rainfall that caused severe flooding and landslides. Rivers overflowed, hillsides collapsed, and entire neighbourhoods were devastated.

The worst-affected areas included Minas Gerais (particularly Juiz de Fora, Ubá, and surrounding mountainous municipalities), Espírito Santo, and Rio de Janeiro’s hillside communities.

More than 400 people were displaced, at least 30 were killed, and dozens remained missing. Flooding and landslides left districts underwater, destroyed infrastructure, and caused widespread damage across affected communities.

Search and rescue operations were carried out by emergency services, with evacuations conducted by boat and helicopter. Temporary shelters were established, damage assessments began, and authorities continued monitoring landslide risks in areas impacted by ongoing rainfall.
